Smartphone makers started making gaming phones a few years ago, which are basically just Android flagships that push their hardware to its limits. Lenovo was one of the first Chinese vendors to take this route, launching its uniquely designed Legion handset a few years ago. Lenovo is now back with the Legion Y90, a gaming phone that features SSD storage in addition to the typical high-speed memory you see on mobile phones.

Gaming phones seem like overkill, given that any modern flagship will deliver a great mobile gaming experience. The Galaxy S22 phones are great gaming phones because they have the best chips possible for Android devices, fast RAM, and fast storage.

But gaming phones like those made by Lenovo are responsible for drawing our attention to certain features. Gaming phones were the first to offer high refresh rates, and now 120Hz displays are the new standard for high-end smartphones.

They’ve also pushed RAM beyond anything we’ve seen before. And they’ve introduced new cooling systems for long-lasting performance. We’ve seen these features hit non-gaming devices as well.

The Lenovo Legion Y90 is the latest addition to the gaming phone category. The handset features the same unusual rear panel design as its predecessor. The camera system sits in the middle of the handset so gamers can comfortably hold it while playing games in landscape mode. Therefore, the camera bump is right in the middle.

The Lenovo Legion Y90 gaming phone

Specs are really where Lenovo’s 2022 gaming phone will impress. Some of them will look familiar to you, as they resemble what you’ll find on the Galaxy S22. But Lenovo pushed the hardware to get the most out of it. The 6.9-inch Full HD+ OLED display has a refresh rate of 144Hz and a multi-finger touch sampling rate of 720Hz. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the display.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-chip (SoC) is identical to that of the Galaxy S22. But it is paired with 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Storage starts at 256 GB of UFS 3.1 flesh memory for these models. Choose the 18GB RAM version and you get 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage and a 128GB SSD.

Using an SSD inside a phone is unusual, but Lenovo does it to increase random write performance by 50%.

Dual fan cooling is also unusual, but it’s something we’ve seen before on Lenovo’s 2021 gaming phone variant. The fans work with liquid cooling so the phone can support an additional 4W of power.

The Legion Y90 also comes with 2 USB-C ports like its predecessor. As a result, the 5600mAh battery supports 68W fast charging. It will take you about 35 minutes to reach a full charge. Along with fast USB-C ports that support up to 10Gbps transfers, you also get fast Wi-Fi 6E wireless internet and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity.

Lenovo Legion Y90 gaming phone: Price. Image source: Weibo

Price and release date

The new Lenovo handset wouldn’t be a gaming phone without rocking the gaming triggers and rear RGB lighting. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound are also present.

Finally, the main camera has a 64-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. The secondary rear camera has a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens. A 16-megapixel camera sits on the front.

If the specs of Lenovo’s gaming phone convinced you to buy one, you should see the pricing structure. The Legion Y90 12GB/256GB version will cost you 4,299 yuan, or about $681. The most expensive model, the one with built-in SSD storage, will cost 5,299 yuan ($839). Those who pre-order the gaming phone will get an instant discount of 300 yuan ($48).

The bad news is that Lenovo will start selling the Legion Y90 in China first. It’s unclear when international markets will receive the new gaming phone.

Black Shark has finally launched the Black Shark 4 Pro worldwide and you can get yours now for just $521 with our special code below! Also, Black Shark was kind enough to send us a 4 Pro so we could hang out with it!

Smartphones for gamers is a small niche that is still a little undefined. After all, given that most Android flagships have roughly the same specs, what makes this phone better for gaming than this phone? Design? Additional hardware or software features? Compatible accessories?

Well, yes, all of the above. Gaming phones differentiate themselves by giving you tools that make it easier and more enjoyable to… well, play games.

And here we have the Black Shark 4 Pro. Black Shark is a gaming-focused sub-brand of Xiaomi and its phones excel in giving you a great gaming experience at a not too high price.

The Black Shark 4 Pro has that slightly exaggerated aggressive gaming look, but in a very subtle way. The matte glass back reveals an X-shaped pattern underneath, and there’s a small RGB light on the back, which you can customize or keep completely off.

The phone mostly feels like a regular daily driver, which I appreciate – it doesn’t try to be too flashy and cross into scared territory.

Where the Black Shark 4 Pro really shines is with its gaming shoulder buttons – full hardware keys with an actual click that give the smartphone a very “mobile console” feel.

Both buttons are hidden inside the body of the phone, flush with it. When it’s time to shoot, you flip a few sliders and the shutters pop out with a satisfying sound effect.

We’ve seen plenty of smartphones with pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons. But these are on another level here – having real click buttons feels instantly at home for anyone looking for a console-like experience. I don’t know how well they’ll fare in the long run, but they definitely work and feel great right now.

Additionally, I would like to commend the attention to detail in the design of the Black Shark 4 Pro. You see, it has two side stereo speakers. The two speaker grilles are positioned so that when I play, I don’t block them with my palms or fingers. It just seems too perfectly placed to be a coincidence.

Shoulder triggers aren’t the only additional hardware controls we have here. The Black Shark 4 Pro also incorporates a pressure-sensitive screen quite cleverly.

The feature is called “Magic Touch”. We have two pressure-sensitive areas on the screen – basically, the left and right halves. You can set the amount of force they respond to and you can map their functions. When you’re gaming, you usually have both thumbs on the screen, right? With Magic Touch, pressing either will trigger a custom command. So basically you have a total of 4 buttons at your fingertips – the shoulder triggers and the pressure activated screen.

Each of the buttons and Magic Touch can be disabled or programmed to act in different ways, depending on the game you’re playing.

Black Shark 4 Pro display and speakers

Of course, a gaming phone has to have an excessive refresh rate and the Black Shark 4 Pro offers a 144Hz display. The touch sampling rate is 720Hz, making it one of the fastest touchscreens market reagents, exactly what gamers want.

It’s a Super AMOLED panel that comes with super saturated colors out of the box, but luckily there’s a “Standard” mode that allowed me to tame the colors and bring some white balance hotter. The resolution is 1080 x 2400 pixels spread over a diagonal of 6.67 inches. So it’s not super sharp, but the pixel-per-inch density is 395, which is perfectly fine.

I’ve mentioned the stereo speakers before – they’re both sideways, presumably because that position allowed for a meatier, more balanced sound. And yes, they sound pretty good. The bass isn’t super deep, but it’s audible. There’s a slight bark from the upper mids, like in most phones with small speakers, but it’s not terribly harsh here.

Also, you may have noticed a shocking hole in the pictures – yes, this phone has a headphone jack! Sadly not positioned to be super ergonomic if you’re playing with headphones, but hey, it’s 2022 – glad we got one of these in the first place.

Additional software and features

The Black Shark software is very much based on Xiaomi’s MIUI. Interestingly, here we have some toggles – we can make the notification tint to be “Android style” or use Xiaomi MIUI style entirely.

But the core apps – weather, clock, gallery and camera – are all taken from MIUI – an interface known for its very fluid and immaculate style with large transparent elements, rounded corners, smooth animations and pleasing graphics.

There are, of course, a few additional features tailored to Black Shark’s specific gaming objective. The “Shark Space” hub will house all of your games and essentially transition to a more mobile console-like UI. It also automatically clears memory and tunes phone hardware as soon as you start a game.

If you want to dig deeper into Shark Space’s settings, you’ll find that you can fine-tune the phone’s performance profile, block notifications and calls during gameplay, configure macros, and tinker with other information. In my experience, the default settings work just fine, although I did go deep into customizing how my buttons and Magic Touch worked.

The Black Shark 4 Pro also has its own digital assistant on board… that’s Shark Chan — it doesn’t do much except set your alarm clock, but it can pop up visually on your desktop if that’s what you’re after. want.

The cameras are a 64 MP main shooter, an 8 MP ultra-wide camera and a 5 MP macro camera. On the front, there is a 20 MP selfie camera. The camera app lets you play with different modes – Portrait, Pro, and a Vlog mode, which quickly creates short clips with various filters synced to a preset music beat.

I can’t go on without quickly mentioning how good the haptics of the Black Shark 4 Pro are. I have to admit that at first I didn’t even notice the precision of the Black Shark 4 Pro’s vibration motor – it was so well suited to the software experience that I took it for granted. It wasn’t until I saw an option in the settings to adjust the strength of the motor that I actually noticed how strong and responsive it was.

120W charger!

The Black Shark 4 Pro has a fairly modest 4,500 mAh battery. But it comes with a huge charging brick in the box – 120 Watts! That’s a laptop charger right there.

According to the manufacturer’s claims, you can recover 50% power in just 5 minutes and 100% in 15 minutes. The phone heats up when charged, but there is a toggle in the settings, which will intelligently limit charging to control the temperature. I suggest keeping this on for longer battery life. The phone still charges very, very fast.

Last word

The Black Shark 4 Pro is finally making its way to western markets and you can buy one from today, March 1, via Amazon or the official Black Shark website! Prices start from $579 / €579 / £489, but you can use our special 10% promo code during this launch period.

A really good deal for what you get – Snapdragon 888, 8GB of RAM (base), 256GB of storage (base), an excellent 144Hz AMOLED display, very good speakers and impressive hardware controls for gaming .

The camera is decent, considering that’s not even the focus or strength of this phone. Of course, when you buy the Black Shark 4 Pro, you’re getting a great mobile gaming kit that also happens to be a solid smartphone.

Customers around the world can also check out the standard Black Shark 4, which is currently available on the official Black Shark online store. For a slightly lower price, it cuts a few corners, but still comes with the same great gaming triggers and a 144Hz screen!

Also this year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S21 FE with an updated set of hardware and software for power users to drool over. I was able to play with the device for a few weeks and here is what I really liked.

A nice dynamic display

The Galaxy S21 FE features a large 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. It supports 120Hz refresh rate as well as HDR10+ for a dynamic viewing experience. The high refresh rate ensures that animations and in-device navigation are smooth and fast.

The panel is flat with a slightly thicker chin at the bottom than we would normally like. But it’s the bright, poppy colors that will always divert your attention. Right in the center at the top is the selfie shooter with a small hole punch.

Works like a flagship

Under the hood, the S21 FE features Samsung’s Exynos 2100 octa-core processor paired with the Mali-G78MP14 V2 GPU – the same as on the flagship Galaxy S21 series. You also have the choice between 8 GB of RAM and 128/256 GB of storage variants.

As you’d expect, the phone maintains its flagship-like performance without breaking a sweat, whether it’s while gaming or multitasking with multiple apps open at once. The user interface is fast and responsive at all times.

Plastic back but feels premium

The back of the S21 FE is made of polycarbonate, which is a fancy term for plastic. But the fit and finish, with an aluminum chassis, does a pretty good job of not looking like plastic. In fact, it can easily fool someone for glass.

Although the matte gray color variant we got looked pretty neat, it wasn’t that good at avoiding fingerprints, but hey, at least your heart won’t skip a beat if you ever drop it On the ground.

Strong autofocus stereo speakers

One of the must-have inclusions in any smartphone these days is the Galaxy S21 FE’s stereo speakers and speakers – one installed near the earpiece and the other near the charging port at the bottom – are quite noisy.

Whether you’re watching YouTube videos, Netflix or even something as simple as a ringtone is very audible. The speakers really envelop you in acoustic bliss while watching movies that you wouldn’t really want to use headphones.

Sharp shooting cameras

The camera housing carries over the same design elements as the flagship S21 with a triple camera array. However, the configuration of the optics and lens is a bit different.

The main camera is a 12-megapixel shooter with an f/1.8 aperture. The second lens is an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and the third is another 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter with a 13mm lens. For selfies, you get a 32-megapixel shooter with an f/2/2 aperture.

The camera manages to capture details quite well, no matter what condition you encounter.

Sure, it’s not iPhone 13 Pro or even Samsung Galaxy’s own S21 Ultra level performance, but at the price it’s stacked at, it surely performs admirably.

How is the S22 Ultra similar to the Galaxy Note?

Samsung seems to have looked to its past for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. For the first time since the Galaxy Note 20, Samsung’s latest high-end phone has a physical slot on the smartphone for the S Pen stylus. Samsung has also made improvements to the S Pens feature by offering lower latency and the ability to transcribe handwritten notes to text in 88 languages. Last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra was the first Galaxy S phone to support the S Pen, but there’s no place to store the stylus and you have to buy it separately.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra also sports an angular Note-like design with sharper edges, which is very different from the softer look of the standard Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. The large 6.8-inch screen of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is also reminiscent of the Note.

For comparison, here’s a photo of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

What about the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s cameras?

At a quick glance, the Galaxy S22 Ultra camera specs are pretty similar to last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra. But Samsung claims to have made significant improvements under the hood to improve the overall quality of the camera.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 108-megapixel wide lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and two 10-megapixel telephoto lenses, similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Both Ultra models are also equipped with a 40-megapixel selfie camera. But, this year, Samsung’s Galaxy S line comes with internal camera upgrades that should make it possible to take pictures in the dark (they call it Nightography) and better frame the subjects. We’ll know more when we test the new S22 Ultra for ourselves, but our first impression of the S22 Ultra’s cameras is… not much.

How many colors is the S22 Ultra available?

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is available in four different colors: black, white, green and burgundy. The base Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are available in black, white, rose gold, and green.

Processor, battery life and other key details

Samsung typically uses both its own Exynos chips and Qualcomm’s processors in its phones, depending on the region, and it did the same this year. It means US version of S22 series works on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1which the chipmaker says should bring improvements like the ability to capture 8K video at 30fps and 30% faster graphics rendering.

Samsung’s new Exynos 2200 processor was unveiled last month. The new chip is said to be a gaming powerhouse and features an all-new graphics processing unit that it built in conjunction with AMD, which the company says will bring a big boost to games and overall graphics performance. However, it is not known whether the Galaxy S22 has this chip.

When it comes to battery life, the S22 Ultra has a lot in common with its predecessor. The S22 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, just like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but comes with 45-watt fast wired charging.

Samsung’s Ultra phones also typically include more memory and storage than their cheaper siblings, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra followed that trend. The base version of the S22 Ultra comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Other options include a model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage.

All told, the Galaxy S22 Ultra looks like a viable successor to Samsung’s popular Galaxy Note. It also makes it easier for Samsung to distinguish the Ultra from the regular Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. The Infinix Zero 5G has leaked and it has been confirmed that it will soon be launched in India. The Zero 5G could rival the Oppo Reno 6.

Infinix Zero 5G LEAK! Infinix’s first 5G smartphone is expected to launch soon in India and based on the leaks, it looks like it will be a mid-range 5G smartphone. The Zero 5G could end up borrowing the design from flagship Android phones, but could end up with a competitive price tag. And, it might boast specs that Xiaomi and Realme might worry about. Infinix hasn’t officially announced anything yet, other than teasers.

The Infinix Zero 5G could become a rival to the recently launched Xiaomi 11i in India, but could end up with a much lower price. Based on leaks from Mysmartprice, the Infinix Zero 5G could be based on the MediaTek Dimensity 900 platform. This is the same chip that powers the Oppo Reno 6. This will also bring support for connectivity 5G, and the leak suggests there will be support for 13 5G bands.

Infinix Zero 5G Leaks

The leak also reveals some other interesting aspects about the Zero 5G. The phone is expected to feature a 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. A small camera cutout will house the front camera, details of which are unknown at this time.

A 5000mAh battery will power the Zero 5G and a 33W fast charging solution will be present. Infinix is expected to launch with Android 11 under its own XOS skin.

Lastly, the Infinix Zero 5G would also come with a 48MP main rear camera. It is said that this one could also offer an ultra-wide camera and a telephoto lens. However, there are no details available on these cameras yet.

Along with specs, the leak also contains official renders of the Zero 5G. The phone largely resembles the Oppo Find X3 Pro, which was Oppo’s flagship Android phone of 2021. The camera bump rises from the rear with a gradual slope separating the “bump” from the rear panel. It will be available in a glossy black color as well as a brown color (the latter appears to be a vegan leather material).

With the Infinix Zero 5G, the company may be looking to move upmarket this year. Local brand Lava tried it out last year with the Lava Agni 5G, which was its first 5G smartphone aimed at the mid-range segment.

Asus unveiled its ROG Phone 5 smartphone at MWC 2021, so we’re probably rapidly closing in on the launch of the Asus ROG Phone 6. Designed for gamers, the ROG Phone 3 and 5 have been reviewed quite well here on Android Authority, both as brilliant gaming handsets and solid feature phones. The current-gen Asus ROG Phone 5 won our coveted Editor’s Choice award, in part for its gaming-oriented features as well as its excellent hardware choices, from powerful front-firing speakers to fast charging.

We certainly want to see Asus continue to deliver the great sound, long battery life, and gaming software that make the series what it is. But, of course, there are some tweaks and improvements that we would like to see next time. So here’s our wishlist for what we want to see from the next Asus ROG Phone 6.

Improved cooling solutions

Ryan-Thomas Shaw/Android Authority

The Asus ROG series of phones are all about gaming performance, and while we certainly have no complaints in that regard, its latest phone can get a little warm during prolonged gaming. Not enough to make the phone uncomfortable to hold, but you can definitely feel the heat after 15-20 minutes.

Asus bundles its Aero Active cooler accessory with the Pro and Ultra variants, but you’ll have to buy it separately with the regular version. It’s a bit bulky to use on the go and isn’t the cheapest accessory, priced at around $45. This accessory would also be better if the extra buttons were easier to reach, so maybe a redesign is in order to make the cooler a bit more ergonomic? Also, going back to bundling the cooler with all models next time wouldn’t hurt either.

Alternatively, it would be great if the ROG Phone 6 came with an improved passive cooling system to improve temperatures without the need for accessories. To be fair to the ROG Phone, Asus already includes charging bypass mode and Wi-Fi optimizations designed to lower temperatures while gaming and extend battery life. More of these cool ideas would continue to separate the phone from the competition.

An even better set of cameras

Ryan-Thomas Shaw/Android Authority

We liked the ROG Phone 5 partly because it offers a solid main camera, especially for a gaming phone. However, image quality from the ultra-wide lens and macro camera doesn’t keep up not the rhythm of the main snapper. Ultrawide results, in particular, could be quite poor, with noticeable distortion. A more robust comprehensive imaging package would certainly improve the overall flagship credentials of the ROG Phone 6.

Likewise, the gimmicky 5MP macro camera could be done away with entirely. It really doesn’t offer much use, but adds to the BOM. Replacing it with a telephoto zoom would offer a lot more flexibility, matching the capabilities of other phones in the ROG series price range. A more Smartphone-like package for Snapdragon Insiders, Qualcomm’s ROG Phone 5-based phone, might do the trick – but hopefully without the bugs and hefty price tag.

A more robust all-round camera array would bolster the phone’s flagship credentials.

We’re not going to demand peak image quality – gaming is still this handset’s main focus after all. But a more competitive and comprehensive set of cameras would certainly make the phone a better long-term investment for gamers and general users.

Sleek features

Ryan-Thomas Shaw/Android Authority

The Asus ROG Phone 5 isn’t IP rated, doesn’t have wireless charging, and we described the in-screen fingerprint scanner as unreliable at best. It’s a shame because we’ve come to expect these features from high-end smartphones that cost $1,000.

With the gaming formula already at a standstill, Asus can afford to work on some features that would improve the more general use of the phone. Wireless charging is a great feature for recharging the battery throughout the day, while a top-notch fingerprint scanner takes the frustration out of unlocking the phone. Likewise, a better selfie camera, IP rating, lower weight, or even expandable storage add value, especially at Asus’ higher prices. We’d settle for two on the wishlist as a decent upgrade to the existing formula.

Addressing them would perfectly complement the already excellent stereo speakers, haptic feedback and capacitive air triggers that make the ROG series a great gaming phone.

Fewer models and variants

Asus ROG Phone 5 Ultimate Edition time on the back screen

Ryan-Thomas Shaw/Android Authority

Asus sold five ROG Phone 5 models at launch – three different memory variants of the standard model, as well as Pro and Ultra variants. Throw in a few ROG Phone 5S models that sported an upgraded Snapdragon 888 Plus processor and there were seven different options to choose from at various times throughout 2021. I’d say that’s easily three or four too many and the range would benefit from a simplified portfolio.

For starters, I’d skip the 128GB storage option. That’s not really enough for a decent game and media collection these days anyway. Likewise, 18GB of RAM in the Ultra model is overkill and probably doesn’t need to exist either, except for bragging rights. It also seems a bit silly that there are different rear display options for the Standard, Pro, and Ultra variants. The price of that small secondary screen is obviously a factor here, but it’s such a unique aspect of the ROG’s design that it should now probably be in or out of all models in the future.

No phone needs to launch with five different variants.

I’d simplify the lineup to three models, with RAM, storage, and maybe camera configurations as key dividers. This will make it much easier for consumers to understand the differences and should still allow Asus to hit prices above and below the $1000 mark without compromising the phone’s key gaming purpose.

Asus’ ROG Phone 5 is a great gaming package with only a few minor flaws, so we have high hopes for the next-gen model. A little more attention to some of the finer details would surely make the Asus ROG Phone 6 a smash hit.
