Is Oppo about to launch a gaming phone?

(Pocket-lint) – Is Oppo about to launch a gaming phone? The renderings were revealed as part of a certification from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) which suggests it may be inbound, as reported by 91Mobiles.

Oppo is no stranger to exploring different avenues. His 2021 X roll-up concept – which we saw for real earlier in the year – shows how much his research and development team is pushing concepts and design ideas into a reality.

A gaming phone isn’t a new concept per se, but it’s new territory for Oppo. And with Asus ROG, Lenovo Legion, and (a sort of ZTE) Nubia Red Magic largely dominating the segment, there’s no shortage of stiff competition.

So what can you expect from an Oppo gaming phone? So far, we only have a handful of images to continue. But it does help turn the tide somewhat, showing off a similar design to the competition, with grippy sections and stylized lines at the rear.

Note that there is no visible front camera, so as not to interrupt the game on the screen. Instead, the slightly larger bezel is probably where the camera is hidden, unless it’s a subscreen or pop-up unit tucked away somewhere – but we doubt that.

The side doesn’t seem to show anything unusual like shoulder triggers, however, so we wonder what Oppo’s unique proposition will be in this market. Maybe this will be one of those that beats everyone else by first shipping a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset.

Time will tell, so if this is real, we wonder when Oppo will officially lift the veil on its gaming phone’s potential …
